You can do both methods, one is shorter- big chop & the other is long time consuming- transitioning which consists of cutting off your relaxed hair little at a time while using protective styles like box braids, twists, crochet braids, weaves & then trim off a little as natural hair regrows in.
It’s basically all leading to the big chop in the end, but if your not ready to cut off all your hair at once, you transition slowly & still get to keep your hair.
But taking care of it & maintaining it, is harder than dealing with a big chop. You have to take care of two different hair styles, risk breakage which is inevitable , so I can say dealing with shedding as well as trying to monitor your new growth.
& that’s why most transitioning girls do protective styles to give there hair a break.
